Question: is there a limit to how far up you can go

The simple answer is no. It just takes time and energy. Humans have been on the Moon and there are plans to go to Mars. People could go to the edge of the solar system, it would just take a long time.
At this time, inter stellar travel would require generation spaceships, where people would set off and it would be their children or grandchildren who would arrive at the other star. They would be born in space and the original people would probably be dead.
