Question: I am studying Mechanical Engineering (BEng) at UCLAN and would like to progress into aerospace/aeronautical engineering after I graduate. What advice do you have for me progressing to the big companies such as Airbus, Rolls Royce, Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems? What would make me stand out from the crown and succeed in pursuing a dream career in my near future?

Hi Tom,
I work for Airbus in the space parts of the company. I would imagine that all these companies you mention will have a similar view.
Decide what you want to do. Is your thing spacecraft, fixed wing aircraft, helicopters, engines …….. Your enthusiasm for the particular option will come through. When you go for an interview / assessment day find out everything you can about the company and their spacecraft, aircraft, etc. Search the internet for everything you can.
Do not give the impression that you just applied to the company just because they were on your list (even if that is what you did).
Tailor your CV to each specific application. I suggest writing a generic one and adjust it for each application.
If the company you want to work for don’t offer you the perfect job, seriously think about taking it. Once you are in the company and are contributing to it, they will be more open to you changing jobs within the company. Many graduates adjust what they are doing in the first few years after they understand the opportunities available.
