The ISS flies at a speed of 17,500 miles/hour. This speed has been very precisely calculated to ensure that it is constantly falling around the Earth at a steady rate. All it requires is constant microgravity exposure, which can be achieved by steadily orbiting around the Earth at a constant speed, so it doesn’t need to be directed anywhere else.
