The extreme conditions here make the environment relatively dangerous. However there are lot’s of safety measures in place to help protect us and keep us safe! For example we always wear special polar gear and have constant radio contact when we go outside. We also don’t go outside when there is poor visibility.

If a problem should occur we can’t be evacuated during the winter even in case of emergency (as the temperatures are too low for the planes to fly). Therefore we have to be self sufficient. For example we are all trained to be part of the fire team. We also have 2 medical doctors, a hospital with an operating theater and tele-medicine facilities.
