Question: If you could give your younger self advise, what would you say?

I would say take every opportunity that is offered to you and say ‘yes’ to everything – you may not know what the opportunity is going to give you and you may not know how you are going to achieve what you’ve just said ‘yes’ to, but you never know where things will lead.

When I started my career, there weren’t really any jobs in human space flight in Europe, but 10 years later, during which time I had taken some opportunities and said ‘yes’ to a lot of things (some of which I had no idea how I was going to do), a job with ESA became available and I had all the right skills and experience to do it.
