Question: Could a bit of the moon ever break and if so what would be the reason that it broke off?

Yes part of the moon could potentially break off, for example if it was hit by a large asteroid…
Let’s hope that doesn’t happen 😉

Actually bits of the moon are breaking off all the time! As Beth said; everytime an asteroid hits the moon its sends pieces of the moon out into space some of these pieces get trapped by the earths gravity and fall to earth (mostly harmlessly ;)). Infact Beth is in a really good location to go hunt for Moon Rocks. Several have been found in Antartica as well as rocks from other planets including Mars:
