In the solar system, and around the Earth orbit there are some chunks of rocks called meteoroids. There are the leftovers of the formation of the solar system or passing comets.
When Earth goes through a cloud of these debris, they become meteors, burning in the atmosphere as they pass through and creating shooting stars.
…and if they fell down to Earth without being completely vaporised, then they are called meteorites 🙂
