Tom: I saw a presentation from a “Martian One” some years ago – and the most critical question was not answered: Where does the money come from? So I am sceptical… And I hope that this historic Mission to Mars will once end with a happy ending, which is for me a safe return to planet Earth..
Hi Morgan,
A mission to Mars is a dream for a lot of people. The history of the exploration of space shows how risky it can be, and some really courageous people have been there already to support the exploration of the Moon.
Whether we want it or not, a mission like Mars One requires sound engineering, sufficient resources and resilient people. Unfortunately, while some aspects of the engineering could reuse some existing technologies, the life support system is the most critical element that has required decades of development just for the ISS. So the project would need serious resources to progress the technology..and this is where it could fall well short of expectations.
It could sound like a great idea to just send people as new Martian settlers, like space Christopher Columbus, discovering new territories, but in this case there a real moral and ethical question as it is built, from the ground up, as a one-way trip.
…all in all, I would not hold my breath just right now… 🙂
Interesting thought experiment but gives other more serious attempts at looking into Martian exploration a bad rep by pretending to be well thought out when it’s clearly not.
