Great question! There’s a good video from the Institute of Physics explaining the life of a star:

Basically, loads of space dust collects together. The more “stuff” you have in one place, the more gravity you get and the more other stuff it pulls in. This starts a chain reaction of more and more stuff and more and more gravity. Eventually the gravity becomes so strong the dust in the centre gets squeezed together so hard it fuses and gives out a load of energy! This energy we see and feel as light and heat… and it becomes a star 🙂
